I stayed up waaayyy past my bedtime last night and finally finished The Other Half of Happy by Rebecca Balcárcel! It's taken me so long to read that I had to go back to the beginning a couple of times to check on details that I missed (like the fact that the story takes place in a fictional Texas town). Missing that piece is a reminder that I really do need to focus on just one fiction book and read it in a timely manner, to keep important details in mind.
That's one of the reasons I enjoy reading picture books at school--we get a complete beginning-middle-end, usually in thirty-two pages, and I can finish a read-aloud in fifteen minutes or so with interactive comments and questions. There are so many wonderful picture books to read--funny, poignant, informative, inspiring. We can picture-walk to enhance comprehension, delve into character's feelings in the illustrations, maybe even notice a story-within-a-story, as in Jan Brett's iconic books.
We are displaying spooky and scary books in the library this month. It's been awhile since I visited that genre; I may have to check out a ghost story to read next--after I finish my in-progress novel, of course.
It's Monday, and I will be pushing myself to read a bit more--and a bit faster--this week. How do you motivate yourself to read more?
