It's Wednesday! What's happening in the AME Library?

What's new?  Well, for one thing, Ms Margocs is back after being gone for the first two days of the week!  It was nice to be back in the stacks and working alongside Ms Moss.

We are continuing to display biographies for Women's History Month.  There are so many good books about famous, creative, courageous, smart women in our collection!

Ms Martin, our art teacher, has turned our library into an art gallery of scholars' work for the next month.  The pictures really brighten up our space!

Our Dillo Readers' Advisory Club has been hard at work pulling books from our shelves that haven't been checked out in over TEN YEARS!  The books in this stack are the ones they think deserve to stay in our collection--if they get checked out.

Only PreK and Kindergarten classes have read-alouds this week.  PreK is doing a review of shapes:

And Kindergarten is listening to Animal Babies with Their Families.

First through fifth grades are checking out books and reading during their visits this week.

Some important upcoming library dates:

Last week of April:  Armadillo Voting for K-2nd; end-of-year library surveys for 2nd through fifth grades.

First week of May:  ALL SCHOLARS' BOOKS ARE DUE BACK IN THE LIBRARY!  There will be a special event to assure that all scholars will have something to read into the summer.

See you in the stacks, Dillo Readers!

It's Monday! What are you reading?

Take a look at what I've ordered lately from a favorite catalog!  I have a collection of mystery novels coming as well...they've been a bit delayed.

Milo Imagines the World is a book that we already have in the library, but I knew I needed a copy for myself.  Matt de la Peña gives us a surprise ending not unlike his Last Stop on Market Street.  I won't give it away, but the lesson from both books is that we can't tell a person's story just by looking at them.

I am in the mood for poetry, and Amanda Gorman's wordsmithing makes me pause, think, and savor.  I'll be taking Call Us What We Carry to read during our DEAR time at our librarians' meeting tomorrow.

The other two books--Do One Thing Every Day That Makes You Smarter, and The Complete Laugh Out Loud Jokes for Kids--were impulse buys.  I think I'm going to loan the latter to our broadcast crew at school to add to our daily news!

It's Monday, and I have enjoyed a picture book and will continue to enjoy some poetry this coming week.  What genres are you reading these days?

It's Wednesday! What's happening in the AME Library?

Welcome back from Spring Break!  It is so nice to see classes in the library again.  We're jumping right into read-alouds and lessons, with only six more weeks of library visits to go until we begin our end-of-year tasks.

PreK and first grades are learning about baby animals and their families.  PreK is noticing that this is informational, nonfiction text; first graders are listening for facts that are new to them.

Kindergarten classes are trying not to yawn as Ms Margocs reads The Yawns Are Coming! by Christopher Eliopoulos.  (Ms Margocs has a Sleepie that lives on her couch...)

Second graders are enjoying the hand gestures that go along with Rita & Ralph's Rotten Day, and thinking about what it takes for Rita and Ralph to get past being angry and be friends again.  (Hint:  it can't happen instantly.)

Third graders are learning that research begins with a question, and the keywords in that question can help you find just the information you need--especially using our online databases.

Fourth and fifth graders are reviewing website evaluation using TRAAP--timeliness, relevance, accuracy, author, and purpose.  They know that not everything you see online is true!

Readers' Advisory is helping Ms Margocs make plans for the library program next year.  We see more booktalks in our future--and maybe some genre challenges, poetry slams, spooky flashlight storytelling...

See you in the stacks, Dillo Readers!

It's Monday! What are you reading?

Oh, Dillos, how the reading bug bit me this Spring Break!  I read THREE books--one favorite, and two new-to-me!  I even worked a bit on a fourth book.

The first book I finished is an oldish favorite of mine:
Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein is a FUN book!  It's like a cross between Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and "Night at the Museum".  There are so many literary and library references in the book that it's hard to keep up with all of them.

I was ashamed to admit that I hadn't read the rest of the series...so I brought the second installment home, too and finished it!
It was just as much fun as the first book, with even more literature referenced!  I especially liked the theme of anti-censorship--very timely these days.   There are a lot of twists and turns that I didn't see coming, and I love the way Grabenstein wraps things up at the end while still leaving room for the next book.

Keeping with the library theme, I finally read a grown-up novel that's been sitting in one of my many piles:
The Library of Lost and Found by Phaedra Patrick is part mystery, part complicated family story, part midlife-crisis-and-rebirth--all in all, a very satisfying story, as a crone also rediscovering myself these days.  Of course, I was drawn in by the library and bookstore settings, but the characters had me hooked.  The ending doesn't answer all the questions, but that's okay.  Life doesn't always give you all the answers.

For the last couple days, I picked up Stella by Starlight again and continued reading. My goal is to finish it by the end of the week so it can go back on our library shelves.

It's Monday, and I felt like I blasted through a reading slump this week!  What books did you enjoy over break?

It's Wednesday! What's happening in the AME Library?

We wrapped up our onsite Spring Scholastic Book Fair on Monday!

We are so close to reaching our sales goal--remember, online shopping is still going through March 14th via this link:

A big thank you again to the volunteers who helped out with our Parent Shopping Event!  We know it makes for a loooong day.

Our current books on display feature famous women, in honor of Women's History Month.

This week is a checkout week for first through fifth grades, to be sure they have plenty to read over Spring Break.

PreK scholars are sharing a caterpillar's impatience with becoming a butterfly:

Kindergarten scholars are learning that one rotten day doesn't have to lead to another, with the Armadillo Readers' Choice book Rita and Ralph's Rotten Day:

Yesterday, four of our Bluebonnet Readers participated in the virtual RRISD Battle of the Bluebonnets!  We didn't win, but we did have fun!

Enjoy your Spring Break, Dillos!  Take some time to read something you like!

It's Monday! What are you reading?

You know that when our Scholastic Book Fair comes to our library, Ms Margocs will be getting a book or two for herself.  Last week was no exception...but you might be surprised by what I picked!

When it comes to the Marvel Universe, I am several movies behind.  One of these days I intend to remedy that with a days-long binge-watching of all the movies in order.  But until then, I'll hunker down with this character guide and catch up on who's who.

It's Monday, and I've got some superheroes and villains to read up on!  What are your favorite comic book characters?  Why do you think you like them so much?
