Tuesday slice: Summer cleaning

Raise your hand if you're an educator who spends at least part of your summer "break" straightening up your house.

All teachers do this, right?  After a school year full of early mornings, late nights, our own children's extracurricular activities, hurried meals, drop-the-bag-and-collapse-workdays and laundry-filled weekends, we are left with a backlog of housecleaning tasks.

Well, that's the state of my house, anyway.  Bags of books and papers in the hall, sitting under a plethora of out-of-season jackets on the wall.  Piles of personal professional books that never made it to my library office shelves.  A paper blizzard on my desk (again).  Work clothes that got washed but not put away.  Work clothes that don't fit due to too many drive-thru meals this year (ugh).  A vanity full of makeup, skin care potions, nail polish, and hair ties in disarray, with a pile of shoes in front of it.

And on top of it all, a layer of dust.

So I'm dedicating most of my free time over these next two weeks to cleaning and decluttering.  I'll make the same vows again to establish a regular housekeeping schedule, even come up with a printed plan, I'm sure.  Fingers crossed it will work this time.

And if it doesn't get done over the next two weeks?  Well, there's always next summer.

  1. Really glad to hear that someone else has these issues! I really want to be one of those organized and orderly people, but I never seem to get there! Sigh…

    1. Every routine I've tried lasts for a few weeks, maybe a couple of months...but all it takes is one or two interruptions, and there it goes, by the wayside. Thanks for commiserating, Carol!

    1. Yep, the yarn is calling, the pool is calling....and my work ethic is so diminished that I have to write a blog post to motivate myself! Ha!

  3. That is totally my life right now. I've been home for two weeks and I'm still going room to room trying to get things in their place or take them to Goodwill. Exhausting.

    1. You're ahead of me. And we have half of college daughter's dorm room just sitting in our living room right now; can't even get to my fireplace mantel to switch out the painting, dust, put up photos....sigh. Plenty of other corners to tackle, though!

    1. Yup. Except those books that have to be read this summer. And I keep on ordering more from Amazon....sigh. Hence the blog title. ;-)

  5. I'll be thinking of you as I finish putting my winter clothes away! I love listening to audiobooks while I clean. It makes my chores much more tolerable. Good luck with accomplishing your goals!

    1. The radio, or some good CDs on my disc changer, definitely help. Though I paused to sing along and entertain my son yesterday. ;-) Thanks for the good vibes to help me along!
